Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard
Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard were pioneering bluegrass musicians whose work reshaped the genre by putting women at the forefront of a traditionally male-dominated scene. Before their emergence, it was rare to see female-led bluegrass bands. Their influence has inspired and earned admiration from countless artists across bluegrass, country, and alternative music, including Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Elizabeth Cotten, Bob Dylan, and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile. While their early repertoire honored traditional songs, their music increasingly addressed social injustices, highlighting gender inequality and labor issues. As Dickens noted, performing bluegrass exposed the challenges women faced, making their art both a musical and political statement. They were inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2017.
