Que Será Será: A Life’s Journey of Sexual Orientation and Gender Expression by Zelda aka Judith Z. Miller
In this performance piece Zelda discusses her gender expression with style as an important element. Growing up she felt extremely uncomfortable in typically feminine clothing and dresses, opting instead to wear boys’ clothes. She felt more comfortable wearing her old football uniform as it made her look more androgynous. Through college she continued to favour masculine aesthetics, wearing leather jackets, and driving a motorcycle. While involved in theatre in Washington D.C in her late 20s, Zelda was in a production of “homemaker and the dyke.” She became very uncomfortable when playing the homemaker and started to cry when she had to put on a dress for the role. When she switched back and forth between different roles in the production, she realised that through acting she could experience gender fluidity. This continued later in life as she experimented with dressing in drag and more deeply exploring both her masculine and feminine sides.
Zelda has a website about this project, which you can also watch here on Youtube.
