Description
Irving Cooperberg (1932-1997) was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. After attending a service at the Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, a gay and lesbian synagogue, he volunteered to serve on the board. He served as chairman from 1980-1984 and again from 1992-1993 as it grew into the largest gay and lesbian synagogue. Cooperberg helped found and then served as the first president of Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in Greenwich Village, and asserts the value of a physical meeting space for LGBTQ+ groups in New York City.
