Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was an acclaimed Carribean-American poet, activist, and theorist who was highly influential in matters both of civil rights and feminism. She self-described herself as “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet” and her major works include Zami: A New Spelling of my Name (1982) and Sister Outsider (1984). She lived in the Lower East Side in the 1950s and 60s in community with other lesbians and discusses her experience of gay Village life in New York City.
