Alma Routsong was born in Michigan in 1924. She served in the WAVES (the U.S. Naval Women’s Reserves) during WWII and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in art. Routsong was arrested during a police raid of the DOB, of which she was a member of the New York Chapter. She eventually moved to Poughkeepsie with her partner, where she died of ovarian cancer in 1996.

MacKay also edited two books: Wolf Girls at Vassar: Lesbian and Gay Experiences 1930-1990 (St. Martin’s Press, 1993) and She Went A-Whaling: The Whaling Journal of Martha Brown (Oysterponds Historical Society, 1993). She lived in New York City before retiring to Orient, New York, where she was an active member of the community. She died in 2012 at age 84. Description
An account of the resource
Julie Lee was an early and important member of the Daughters of Bilitis. She worked as a secretary and lesbian counselor for the DOB and kept up correspondence with a large number of women from across the United States, advising them on various issues including finding support, coming out, various personal issues, and locating literature, as well as general topics relating to lesbianism. Although she generally told the younger set to wait until they had reached the age of majority before locating and joining a DOB group, her writings invariably reached a large number of lesbians and helped them accept themselves and locate the support and resources they needed.

LHA Daughters of Bilitis Video Project: Nikki Nichols, 1987
Description
An account of the resource
Rosalie J. “Nikki” Nichols was born in March 1938. She grew up in Sacramento during the early 50s, the child of a mother with an interest in Freudian psychology and a Kansan farmer father. She became involved with the Daughters of Bilitis in 1956 as a student at UC-Berkeley, while also working on board the Sacramento Valley chapter of the ACLU. She was given the nickname “Nikki” by co-workers of hers whom she happily discovered were gay as well.
Amongst other activist work she has been active in the American Indian movement – including work with the Federated Indians of California, which was started by a family friend. She and a partner published Lesbian Voices starting in 1974, and later owned a bookstore named Ms. Atlas Press. She has also worked as a vocational councilor at a rehab, and has been involved with the Fabian Forum, the Unitarian Church, and NOW.

An account of the resource
Martha Shelley interviews Gene Damon aka Barbara Grier, founder of the lesbian magazine The Ladder (1956-1972). They discuss the beginnings of The Ladder and how it evolved from a smaller publication within the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) into an independent publication. Grier discusses the shift in content as well once the magazine became independent of the Daughters of Bilitis. Grier felt that under DOB they were focused on presenting a clean public image of lesbians to society at large and that this was reflected in what was published in older versions of The Ladder. Once Grier became the editor, she felt it was important to address topics like sexuality, saying “we began running material that deals with sex honestly and forthrightly.”
