Lambda Legal Forum, 1982
Description
An account of the resource
Lambda Legal was established on October 18, 1973 and is the oldest and largest organization dedicated to litigating gay rights claims, and has played a major role in shaping the outcome of gay rights claims. Lambda has won precedent-setting civil rights issues ranging from marriage equality to expressions of gender identity to health care discrimination.
This video, Lambda Legal Forum 4, dated October 28, 1982, depicts a panel discussion between Rosalyn Richter, the then Executive Director and attorney for Lambda Legal, and Rhonda Copelon, the then an attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights and law professor at CUNY Law School moderated by David A.J. Richards, a teacher of Constitutional Law and Legal Philosophy at NYU School of Law. This discussion succeeds the Supreme Court’s 1980 decision in Harris v. McCrae, which established that the constitutional right to decide to end a pregnancy (recognized in Roe v. Wade in 1973) did not mean an equality right to have Medicaid cover abortion care.
Ricther and Copelon also discuss how to develop arguments to challenge criminal sodomy laws, how arguments about religion and morality might be separated in the context of Victorian-era morality laws, and how to advance the custody and visitation rights of lesbian and gay parents (those coming out of different-sex marriages) in the face of widespread assumptions that lesbian, gay and bisexual people are immoral and pose threats to children.

The speakers discuss values and gay rights issues through the context of individual choice versus choice that brings harm. Richter and Copelon discuss and answer questions about Roe v. Wade and housing for queer youth. The video then cuts to a document entitled "Anti Gay Legislation: an Attempt to Sanction Inequality." An individual then holds up a Lambda document entitled “Court Approves Gay Adoption.”

Robin Morgan talks about the creation of the New York Radical Women group in 1967 (20-25 women), the male Left, working on the Atlantic city pageant demonstration 1968, and publishing the "Sisterhood Is Powerful: An Anthology of Writings from the Women's Liberation Movement" in 1970. She then reads a poem and uses poetry as a political tool, as well as asserts that the Women's Movement is fostering relations between different strata of US society. Morgan advocates for women to take control legally, health-wise, and become an international force. She states that rape and pornography affect all women and she depicts women as the largest and longest subjugated people. The Women's Movement will continue to prosper.

A name given to the resource
Dyke TV television program components, 1993-1998
Description
An account of the resource
Dyke TV was a groundbreaking public access program founded in 1993 by Mary Patierno, Ana Marie Simo and Linda Chapman. An offshoot of the Lesbian Avengers, the mission of Dyke TV was to incite, provoke and organize communities to create tangible change. The program sought to increase lesbian visibility and to systemically change people's views of lesbians, gay rights and women's rights. Dyke TV comprehensively documented a critical time period in gay and lesbian history and shared stories that were important to lesbian communities when no other programs were.
The program first aired in June 1993 on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network public access television channel. The show started off as a weekly 30 minute program produced by a core of Dyke TV producers with help from members of the community. The show followed a magazine format. Each program consisted of various segments such as I Was a Lesbian Child, The Arts, From the Archives, News and Eyewitness. Some areas of interest included lesbian history, daily life, activism, and international LGBTQ issues. Ideas for stories were discussed during production meetings and the producers welcomed ideas from everyone involved. According to one of the program’s co-founders and executive producer, Mary Patierno, “if anybody wanted to do a story we let them do it. We were there to let people voice whatever they wanted to, whatever issues or topics that were of interest to them.” The producers aimed to create a very well rounded program that could highlight lesbian life from as many angles as possible. Another part of Dyke TV’s mission was to train women in video production. The producers conducted regular workshops so that women could learn how to tell stories they wanted to tell in their own voices. This community oriented attitude allowed for widespread contributions about lesbian issues across the United States and abroad. At its peak, Dyke TV was distributed on 78 public access channels throughout the United States. Dyke TV documented many political actions happening in the early 1990s within the LGBTQ community, including actions by ACT UP and the Lesbian Avengers.
The Dyke TV collection at the Lesbian Herstory Archives consists largely of unedited footage that documents marches and demonstrations in New York City. Other tapes include incomplete episodes and compilations of show segments. Segments available to view in this exhibition include “The Arts,” “News,” “Eyewitness,” “I Was a Lesbian Child,” and “From the Archives.” This does not however represent the complete range of segments seen on Dyke TV; other favorites not seen here included Lesbian Health, On the Street, and Ann Northrop Mouths Off.

Description
An account of the resource
This is an interview with Jelena Topalović* about being a queer woman in Yugoslavia during the Yugoslav Wars. She discusses nationalism of the Serbian government, women’s rights, and social attitudes toward homosexuality. Topalović discusses the role of women in Serbian society- that of the mother and the nurturer, and how being a lesbian places people outside that paradigm. She also discusses the government campaign to ban abortion, explaining that this makes lesbian women 'useless' members of society because they do not fit into a nationalistic image that a woman's purpose is to bear children to increase the Serbian population. While she notes there were no specific bans in place against lesbians, the government could still make life very difficult for them. She then discusses Arkadia, Serbia’s first Lesbian Lobby, in which she provides a space for women to gather and discuss issues that affect them, and how to fight misconceptions about lesbianism propagated by the government, and social stigmas against lesbians and single women.

Women from ACT UP LA and some gay men who worked with them, attending the AIDS Clinical Trials Groups Meetings in Washington, D.C.
This is a tape of women from ACT UP LA (lesbian and heterosexual) and some gay men who worked with them, attending the AIDS Clinical Trials Groups Meetings in Washington, D.C. from November 3-November 5, 1992. It has footage of them in their hotel rooms , as well as footage of researcher meetings, the activists discussing what they have heard and the action they did at the Democratic Party Election Night Shindig, where they took over the stage with a banner that read "NO MATTER WHO IS PRESIDENT, AIDS IS STILL A CRISIS" as Jesse Jackson was finishing his speech after the results showed that Clinton was elected. There is also footage of them planning their strategy for getting on stage of of them waiting for the perfect moment and celebrating afterwards. There is footage of them on the mall in the evening just having fun. There is also footage of them watching Bush concede (in their hotel room watching TV), of them finding out that Mary's boss is one of 50 people invited to attend a meeting with Clinton's staff re: AIDS on the following Saturday and of them preparing material for her, along with Iris Long (ACT UP NY) and Vic Hernandez (ACT UP NY).
Most of the footage was taken either by Mary Lucey (an HIV-infected lesbian who was in ACT UP LA, on the ACT UP National Women's Committee, and later co-founded Women Alive in LA), Nancy McNiel (Mary's lover also in ACT UP LA, the National Women's Committee and co-founder of Women Alive), and Seh Welsch (a Native-American Lesbian who founded Santa Barbara ACT UP, was on the National Women's Committee and is the E.D. of the Indian Health Center in Santa Barbara). Also in the video are Vic Hernandez (a Mexican-American from the S.F. area but a member of ACT UP NY at the time) and Kyioshi Kurimyia (an Asian-American who was a member of ACT UP Philadelphia, and founded Critical Path, a newsletter about AIDS treatments, especially alternative and wholistic treatments), both of whom are gay men. Iris Long, a heterosexual woman who was an early member of ACT UP NY, a founder of its Treatment and Data Committee, one of the first pseople to document the exclusion of women from clinical trials, is also shown in the video. She is a pharmaceutical chemist (Ph.D.) who taught the men in ACT UP everything they knew about pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical treatment research.

Episode of Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) cable show Living with AIDS, covering topics related to women with AIDS. Begins with clip from CBS special "Aids Hits Home", acknowledging new media coverage of heterosexual women with AIDS because of an inherent threat to middle class. Ruth Rodriguez from the Hispanic AIDS Forum notes that IV drug users comprise 60% of HIV+ women, a social group largely ignored by health professionals. Outreach and AIDS education media should be produced for a range of social groups. References Needle Talk, a series released by the New York Department of Health with physicians and educators discussing IV drug use, sex, and AIDS/HIV transmission.

A name given to the resource
LHA Daughters of Bilitis Video Project: Barbara Grier, 1987
Description
An account of the resource
Barbara Grier was born on November 4, 1933 in Cincinnati, OH. Her affiliation with the Daughters of Bilitis began in 1957, when she started to subscribe to The Ladder. Shortly thereafter she began writing book reviews for the publication, then served as poetry and fiction editor from 1966-1968, when she became the editor-in-chief. In this role, Grier included news stories, essays, prose and poetry that focused on the burgeoning women’s movement. When the DOB folded in 1970, she and DOB President Rita Lapore continued to publish The Ladder until this ceased in 1972, for financial reasons.
Grier met Donna McBride, the reference librarian at the Kansas City, MO public library and Grier's eventual partner, in 1971. McBride first knew Grier as a library patron who made frequent and numerous recommendations of books of lesbian interest that she wanted the library to buy. In January 1973, Grier and McBride, started Naiad Press, the “world’s largest [and foremost and longest-lived] publisher of lesbian books” -- by lesbians, about lesbians and for lesbians. It included romance novels, histories, erotica, volumes of poetry, science fiction and self-help guides, as well as mysteries, non-fiction and classics. Prior to Naiad, “lesbian literature was primarily written by men whose protagonists generally ended up in one of two ways: they married a man or killed themselves.” Grier and McBride kept their day jobs until 1982, when Naiad became their full-time work. In 1995 Grier donated her “Lesbiana" collection to the James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center of the San Francisco Public Library.” Bella Books took over when Grier closed Naiad Press in 2005.
Grier died of cancer on November 10, 2011 in Tallahassee, FL.

LHA Daughters of Bilitis Video Project: Pamela Oline, circa 1987-1993
Description
An account of the resource
Born and raised in post- World War One England in 1925, she has always professed to being a straight ally to the lesbian movement. After moving to the United States when she was fourteen, she kept her political and social views, and was involved in several political movements in France around 1953, and later subsequently fired from an Air Force job due to her left-wing views on the McCarthy movement.
When the first rumblings of political change began in the student movements in 1968, Pamela began to pay more attention to the issue of homosexuality, seeing it as a question of civil liberties. Recently making the career change from mathematician to therapist at age 45, she recognized the psychological aspects of overt oppression as well as internalized oppression within the gay rights movement.
Her acquaintance with the Daughters of Bilitis came through an out lesbian friend, who knew that she was looking for “an arena to practice [therapy] in,” and suggested that Pam view the organization from the inside. After she attended her first DOB meeting in their 47th/48th street headquarters in New York City, she became more involved in a group of New York based psychotherapists who were also interested in the lesbian movement.
Pamela was instrumental in founding the DOB’s well known “rap groups,” as well as bringing more feminist ideals and issues to the organization, before her association with the DOB dwindled beginning in 1971, when she joined the Feminist Therapy Collective and the Gay Academic Union (GAU), to which she began to devote most of her time.

Julie Lee was an early and important member of the Daughters of Bilitis. She worked as a secretary and lesbian counselor for the DOB and kept up correspondence with a large number of women from across the United States, advising them on various issues including finding support, coming out, various personal issues, and locating literature, as well as general topics relating to lesbianism. Although she generally told the younger set to wait until they had reached the age of majority before locating and joining a DOB group, her writings invariably reached a large number of lesbians and helped them accept themselves and locate the support and resources they needed.

LHA Daughters of Bilitis Video Project: Barbara Gittings and Kay Tobin, February 20, 1988
Description
An account of the resource
Barbara Gittings
Barbara Gittings, the daughter of a U.S. Diplomat, was born July 31, 1932 in Vienna, Austria. She grew up in Wilmington, DE. Gittings' first exposure to the Daughters of Bilitis was at one of their meetings during the summer of 1956 during a visit to New York. In 1958, Gittings, along with Marion Glass, established the New York chapter of DOB at the request of Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. Through her involvement with DOB, Gittings met and began dating another member, Kay Lahusen (Tobin) who she worked with on many DOB projects. Gittings took on national responsibilities in 1963 when she became the editor of the DOB publication, The Ladder. Under Gittings' leadership, the distribution of The Ladder increased and drew notice from other homophile groups. Gittings' relationship with DOB and The Ladder soured after a few years when her her editorial decisions began to clash with the expectations of other members. She was asked to leave her position in 1966, and began to pursue other interests in activism and homophile research.

Kay Lahusen (Tobin)
Kay Lahusen (pseudonym Kay Tobin) appears very briefly in this digitized interview. Kay was born on January 5, 1930. She spent her childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to Boston as a young adult to work in the reference library at the Christian Science Monitor. Kay became acquainted with DOB through Richard Robertiello after reading his book Voyage to the Lesbos: The Psychoanalysis of a Female Homosexual. She attended her first DOB meeting in 1961, which is where she met Barbara Gittings. She and Gittings began dating and Kay helped lead the East Coast branch of DOB for the next decade. When Gittings became editor of The Ladder, Lahusen contributed to the publication with her photography skills. She created many portraits of lesbians willing to be featured in the magazine and photographed many homophile activities. In 1972 Kay co-wrote The Gay Crusaders with Randy Wicker, based on a series of interviews with gay and lesbian activists.

From Gallo, M.
